The early morning of April 15, 1887, marked a significant chapter in the history of publishing in Kerala with the launch of Deepika, initially known as Nazrani Deepika. This publication holds the distinction of being India's first Malayalam newspaper, an endeavor that fulfilled the long-held aspirations of its Founder Editor, Fr. Emmanuel Nidhiry (Nidhirikal Mani Kathanar). Known for his insight and creativity, Nidhiry was a notable figure of his time.

Deepika was first produced using a handmade wooden press established by the visionary Carmelite monk, Fr. Kuriakose Elias Chavara (now recognized as Saint Chavara) in Mannanam, a small village near Kottayam, Kerala. This initiative not only symbolized the beginning of organized journalism in Kerala but also heralded the advent of a more sophisticated and independent press.

Managed by the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) congregation until 1989, Deepika underwent a transformation when it became a Limited Company named Rashtra Deepika Ltd., aimed at infusing fresh energy and professionalism into its operations.

The founders envisioned high aspirations for this pioneering project, which played a critical role in enhancing literacy in Kerala. Under Fr. Emmanuel Nidhiri’s dynamic leadership, along with a team of intellectuals, Nazrani Deepika steadfastly progressed into the 20th century, broadening its reach and impact. Its publication frequency evolved from weekly to twice and eventually thrice a week, attracting contributors and correspondents from diverse sectors of society.
